The Litterbox Cake
Since my daughter is showing her longhaired Selkirk Rex in TICA, I thought it only fitting that we make her the legendary 'Litterbox Cake' for her 11th birthday!
This recipe has been floating around the web for years, but I have never attempted it before. It was relatively easy and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a humorous cat-related cake to bake. Just remember- one MUST have a sense of humor before attempting this cake!
The ingredients we used were:
One chocolate cake mix (and ingredients)
One white cake mix (and ingredients)
Vanilla sandwich cookies (like Oreos, but vanilla!)
Vanilla instant pudding
And don't forget the TOOTSIE ROLLS!
Additonal Must-Haves
Brand-new litterbox
Brand-new scoop
Step-by-step directions
1. First, bake both cakes and set aside to cool.
2. Crush the vanilla cookies into crumbs. You can use a food processor, but we are old-school. We placed our cookies in a Ziploc bag and smashed them with a rolling pin. This method is wearisome, but it works!
3. Mix up your pudding and set aside.
4. Now, you need to take your litterbox and crumble your cakes into the box.
5. Next, you will nuke a few Tootsie Rolls in the microwave until they are pliable. For our microwave, that was 10-15 seconds. Any longer and they melted down into goo.
6. Mold the Tootsie Rolls to look like... cat tootsie rolls. Put a few into the cake.
7. Now mix the vanilla pudding into your cake. You are supposed to make it moist, but not wet. I'd suggest using 1/2 to 3/4ths of the pudding.
8. Sprinkle your crushed cookies on top- this is your litter. Now, the recipe I was following called for green food coloring. We did not use it- but you might if you are going for certain brands of litter!
8. Now, you will place the rest of your Tootsie Rolls on the cake. Place some half in, half out of the cookie crumbs. Dangle some off the sides for that kitty that always misses.
Now, for those with a sick sense of humor- which I do have, fortunately- I recommend nuking a few Tootsie Rolls to bubbling messes. Then scrape them up with the spatula and dribble them on your cake. Every last one of us cat owners have dealt with the pudding poo of a cat with an upset stomach- this is a pretty accurate depiction!
That's it! It was really quite easy!
For those wondering, it actually IS a decent tasting cake! We ate it with vanilla ice cream with chocolate swirl on top- let the ice cream soften and it's perfect on top of the cake! Also, as gross as it looks when it's 'perfect'- once you cut into it and see the crumbled cake, the facade is really lost and it's nowhere near as gross to eat!
